Why convert DjVu to PDF in your browser?
DjVu archives are usually the interesting stuff: out-of-print books, dissertations, historical records, personal scans. Uploading them to a converter site means trusting a stranger with material you may not have the right to share, or simply do not want to. Converting locally keeps the file on your device from first byte to finished PDF, and the output opens everywhere DjVu does not: phones, e-readers, browsers and print dialogs.
The only DjVu converter that never sees your file
DjVu conversion has been stuck server-side for years: the format is obscure enough that every converter just runs DjVuLibre on their machines, which means your scanned book, thesis or archive gets uploaded to someone else’s server first. This tool uses a clean-room, MIT-licensed DjVu decoder compiled to WebAssembly, so the decoding happens in your browser tab. There is no server component at all, and your browser’s own network tab will show it: no request carries your document anywhere.
Make the result searchable and small
A DjVu is a stack of scanned images, so the converted PDF is too. Is my DjVu file uploaded to a server?+
No. Every other DjVu converter we know of sends your file to a server for conversion. This one decodes and renders it entirely in your browser with a small WebAssembly decoder, so the file never leaves your device. You can verify it yourself: open your browser’s network tab while converting, or watch the live network meter on our home page.
What is a DjVu file?+
DjVu is a 1990s format built for scanned documents: books, journals, forms and old archives. It compresses scans very well, but almost nothing opens it today, which is why archives full of .djvu files end up converted to PDF.
Will the quality match the original?+
Pages are rendered at their original scan resolution, capped at 300 dpi, which keeps text crisp for reading and printing. Very high-resolution scans (600 dpi) are downsampled to 300 dpi to keep the PDF size and memory reasonable.
Will the text be selectable and searchable?+
Not directly: DjVu pages are scans, so the PDF pages are images too. If your DjVu contains a hidden OCR text layer, it is not carried over in v1. Run the converted PDF through our OCR PDF tool to add a searchable, selectable text layer, also without uploading.
Can it handle a whole scanned book?+
Yes. Multi-page DjVu documents convert page by page with a progress bar, and there is no page or size limit beyond your device’s memory. A few hundred pages is fine on a normal laptop.
The PDF came out large. Can I shrink it?+
Scanned pages stored as lossless images add up. Run the result through our Compress PDF tool, which recompresses the page images on your device, to bring the size down.
Does it work offline?+
Yes. After your first visit the decoder is cached, so the tool keeps working with no internet connection, which is also the strongest possible privacy guarantee.
