Why compress images in your browser?
The photos people compress most are the personal ones: ID photos, signatures, documents and pictures of family. Most online compressors upload them to a server first. How do I compress an image to exactly 50 KB (or 20 KB, or 100 KB)?+
Switch to Target size, type the limit, and compress. The tool searches for the highest quality that still fits under that size. If quality alone cannot get there, it shrinks the pixel dimensions step by step, because a smaller sharp image looks better than a same-size blurry one. If the target is impossible without making the image unusably small, it tells you so rather than pretending.
Are my images uploaded?+
No. Each image is decoded and re-encoded inside your browser tab, so your photos never reach a server. You can check it yourself: open your browser network tab while compressing, or disconnect from the internet first. It still works.
Will the image look worse?+
At Light or Balanced most people cannot see a difference on screen, while the file gets much smaller. Strong is for when size matters more than detail, like chat apps and web forms. Photos compress far better than screenshots or graphics with sharp text.
Why did my PNG turn into a JPG?+
PNG is a lossless format, so it cannot get much smaller on its own. In Auto mode, a PNG without transparency is saved as JPG, which is where the real savings are. A PNG with transparent areas is saved as WebP instead, so the transparency survives. Pick JPG or WebP yourself under "Save as" if a portal needs a specific format.
Can it ever make a file bigger?+
No. If compressing would not make an image smaller, for example because it is already heavily optimised, the original is kept exactly as it was and the result tells you so.
Does it remove location data?+
Yes. Re-encoding drops EXIF metadata, which includes the GPS location and camera details many phone photos carry. That makes compressed images safer to share publicly.
Which formats work?+
JPG, PNG and WebP. For iPhone HEIC photos, convert them with HEIC to JPG first, then compress.
