Why is the result not a PNG?+
A PNG stays large because it is lossless. The savings come from saving it as JPG or WebP. If you need the output as JPG specifically, set "Save as" to JPG.
Will transparent areas be kept?+
Yes, in Auto mode. Transparent PNGs are saved as WebP, which supports transparency. Choosing JPG turns transparent areas white.
Is the text in my screenshot still sharp?+
Use the Light level for screenshots with small text; it keeps edges crisp.
