Make a freelance invoice
Everything a client needs to pay you, and nothing they do not.
A freelance invoice does not need to be complicated, but it does need the things that stop it sitting unpaid: a number, a date, clear lines saying what the work was, the total, and how to pay. This produces that in any currency, with tax if you are registered and none if you are not, and remembers your details so the next invoice takes a minute.
How to make a freelance invoice
- 1
Set your country and currency
Pick your country for its tax rules, or choose Other and set the currency and tax name yourself.
- 2
Describe the work properly
One line per piece of work, with enough detail that the person approving it recognises what they asked for. Vague invoices get queried.
- 3
Number it and download
A sequential number is filled in for you and remembered, so your records stay in order.
Why not use an invoicing subscription
For a few invoices a month, a subscription is a monthly charge to reformat information you already have. This produces the same PDF, keeps your numbering, and costs nothing.
Frequently asked questions
What if I am not registered for tax?+
Set the rate to zero and do not print a tax number. Do not charge VAT or GST unless you are registered for it, which is a rule everywhere.
How do I invoice a client in another country?+
Invoice in the agreed currency and state your payment details in full, including the bank identifiers the client bank will need. Cross-border tax treatment varies, so check whether the work is zero rated or reverse charged.
How do I get paid faster?+
Invoice the day the work is done, state the due date rather than net terms, and put the payment details on the invoice rather than in the covering email.
Is my client list uploaded?+
No. Your business details and invoice numbering are stored in your browser, not on a server.
