A quotation is a promise with an expiry date, and the ones that cause trouble are the ones missing a detail: no validity, no payment terms, no reference to what was asked for. This lays out the standard format, with your business at the top, the customer, a reference to their enquiry, the priced lines, the total in figures and words, and the terms underneath. Your details are remembered, so the next quote is mostly done before you start.

Why the terms matter more than the price
Disputes are rarely about the number. They are about what was included, when it was due and what the deposit covered. A quotation that states all three is the cheapest insurance available.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a quotation be valid?+
Long enough for the customer to decide, short enough to protect you from a price change. Fifteen to thirty days is normal, and it should always be written on the document.
Is a quotation binding?+
Generally a quotation is an offer that becomes binding when accepted within its validity, while an estimate is only an indication. Say clearly which one you are giving.
What happens after it is accepted?+
The customer usually raises a purchase order, you deliver with a delivery note, and you bill with an invoice. All of those come from the same set of details here.
